Sandy Treadwell (R-Westport) or Sandy Treadwell (R-Lake Placid)?

Apparently Republican 20th Congressional District candidate Alexander "Sandy" Treadwell may have some residency issues.

According to newsmeat.com, Treadwell's most recent campaign contribution filings, dated June 8th and June 15th, 2007, lists his residency as being in the Town of Westport, instead of the Village of Lake Placid, where he now claims to reside.

The Problem? The Town of Westport is located about 18 miles northeast of the 20th Congressional District boundaries (or 35 miles east of the Lake Placid Village) in the 23rd Congressional District now being represented by Republican John McHugh. Treadwell actually admitted last February at an Essex County Republican Committee meeting that he purchased property in Lake Placid back in 2004 so it could appear as though he was living within the 20th Congressional District boundary lines. As some may recall, at the time, Treadwell, a close ally of George Pataki, was contemplating challenging ex-U.S. Rep. John Sweeney (R - Clifton Park) in a primary, largely because of Sweeney's ongoing feuds with the former governor. From the Essex County Republican Committee Minutes, February 27, 2007:

Sandy thanked the committee for the opportunity to meet with them and stated that he was interested in the 20th Congressional District. He stated that his family has lived in the Westport area for 101 years but Westport is not in the 20th Congressional District and although any citizen over 21 years of age can run in any district in America, back in 2004 he and his wife bought a house in Lake Placid and so Lake Placid is now his legal residence. Sandy stated that he is not an announced candidate yet but he is looking forward to the challenge and to represent Essex County as well as the 650,000 people in the 20th Congressional District.

While the current federal law only requires that you live in the same state as the district in which you intend to run for Congress, some serious credibility issues are raised when Treadwell may not actually reside where he claims to be living.

More Dirt on Sandy...

It looks like Sandy Treadwell is once again helping to bankroll another scandal plagued politician - this time it's Harry Tutunjian, the mayor of Troy who's now under special investigation as to whether he collaborated with three of his appointees in using county-owned materials to lie to city voters.

From The Troy Polloi:

Scandal rocked City Hall on Friday as three Tutunjian appointees were accused of using a city office, vehicle, phone and County employee to lie to city voters. The allegations came from Colleen Regan, a former Rensselaer County employee. In her affidavit, Ms. Regan describes a county government steeped in a culture of intimidation and arrogance.

Apparently Treadwell seems to have no problem with the "culture of intimidation and arrogance" down in Troy:

Alexander "Sandy" Treadwell, former state Republican chairman and current candidate in the 20th Congressional District, will host a $250-a-head fundraiser for Troy Mayor Harry Tutunjian, who is seeking re-election this fall.
The event will be held at 5:30 p.m., on June 4 at the Tosca Grille on Broadway, just a short walk from City Hall.
While part of Rensselaer County is in the 20th Congressional District, Troy is in the 21st Congressional District, represented by U.S. Rep. Michael McNulty, D-Green Island.
U.S. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-Greenport, defeated incumbent and Troy native son John Sweeney in November to win the 20th Congressional District seat.

NY-20: Treadwell's In...

Multi-millionaire Essex County Republican activist Alexander ?Sandy? Treadwell today announced his intention to challenge U.S. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand in New York?s 20th Congressional District next year.

Even despite all of Treadwell?s wealth and connections, his long history of being a strong supporter of the Bush Administration will likely make it difficult for him to overcome Gillibrand?s surging popularity and her strong record of reform, especially when many are speculating that 2008 could be one of the worst political years ever for the GOP (possibly even worse than 2006).

All in all, there are many, many, significant hurdles Sandy Treadwell will likely have to overcome in order to run a competitive campaign here next year:

Treadwell was one of the largest individual donors to George W. Bush?s 2005 inauguration, contributing $100,000.(Source)
According to the Wikipedia, Treadwell was the host state chairman for the 2004 Republican National Convention which nominated George W. Bush for President and Dick Cheney for Vice President.
A White House internet document contains a speech of George W. Bush thanking Treadwell at a reception in June of 2003, stating ?Sandy, thank you for your leadership and your help.? (This obviously would make for a good advertising sound byte)
Treadwell played a major role in helping to set up and fund the Orwellian-named ?New Yorkers for Responsible Leadership? PAC, which successfully helped to bail out 26th District Rep. Tom Reynolds last year after his polls plummeted from his involvement in the Mark Foley scandal.(Source)

The big choice the voters of the 20th Congressional District will have to make up their minds about in 2008 is whether they want continued, progressive, reform-minded representation by Kirsten Gillibrand or a return to the failed, tired and tried theocratic corporatism of George W. Bush, John Sweeney, and Gerry Solomon.

NY-20: Looks like Treadwell and Wager Are In?

While the Republicans can?t seem to find anybody to run for Congress in many parts of the country due to the current sad and pathetic state of their party, (unfortunately) the wingnuts just can?t seem to leave us alone here in the 20th?

According to The Post-Star, both Bloomberg hack Richard Wager and ex-state Republican chair Alexander ?Sandy? Treadwell are in the process of setting up exploratory committees to run for Congress in the 20th Congressional District against Kirsten Gillibrand in 2008.

Here?s what one blogger recently had to say about a potential Treadwell challenge of Gillibrand?

?Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand (D) has nothing to worry about here (if she does) the job work for her constituents. If she takes care of her people they will take care of her. If she works for her district (she?ll) let the likes of Sandy Treadwell twist in the down draft of the RNC?s corrupt The F.O.G. Elite. If all the RNC can muster is a political hack from (the) party central times are tough and the going is rough.?

Yes, times must certainly be tough if the GOP wants somebody who was one of the largest contributors to George W. Bush?s 2005 inauguration to run here next year. Overall, Gillibrand is looking safer and safer by the day, especially in the wake of a potential meltdown for the GOP in 2008?

NY-20: Major Bush Donor Mulling Run For Congress
