Morris Guller's Letter to the Editor

Greene County Democratic activist Morris Guller recently submitted a press release to several major media outlets throughout the region urging the need for greater energy independence through the increased use of wind power:

You Own Gold.

It's true. Saudi Arabia sits atop the largest supply of natural energy - oil.  It is not, however, in endless supply. It will run out.

It is also true that the area between the Great Northern Catskill Mountains and the Adirondack Mountains is located right underneath the greatest natural energy source of any kind - wind. And wind, unlike oil, is renewable, never ending, clean and free.

If you live in this great expanse from Poughkeepsie to Lake Placid then you only have to look up to see the tops of the trees entertaining the oncoming wind to know you have a virtual gold mine in your very own back yard.

And if you did have a gold mine in your very own back yard it is my hope that you would at least take some time to investigate or dig a little - maybe to help pay your utility bill or for fuel at the pump.

I've been an advocate for Wind Power and Wind Power Farms in our area since 2001. I see interest in these farms as prices rise during election cycles and peak when the price of heating oil goes above $2.65 a gallon and gas breaks into the horrid threes.

When the elections are over and the public becomes complacent with outrageous oil and gas prices, the subject of Wind Power reverts to the back burners in newspaper articles and political talk - just like the oil companies want.

To catch the wind and turn it into energy we need turbines and those are not free. And there is a downside to turbines that are built in the path of bird migration. Birds get hurt so the turbines have to be built away from established migration routes.

The upside is unlimited, renewable, and reusable power. The statistics are mind boggling and you have little to do but go to Google and enter Wind Power into the search to get all the details. Then call or write the Governor, your Senators, Representatives, Mayors and so on.

Wind Power can save us. Like affordable health care and an end to war, we must demand it.

Imagine pulling up to a Power Station (not the gas station) and plugging your car in for a two minute fill up.  If your car is currently getting 26 miles to the gallon and your gas fill up is costing you about $50.00 then you need to know that the same energy will cost you the equivalent of 5 cents a gallon to recharge your car battery. Amazing? Yes! True? Yes!

We can all do something about the high price of fuel. We can make ourselves heard. We can demand a better deal for ourselves and a better future for our children.

It's true. Look Up! There's gold in them there hills.
