On January 7th, 2008, New York State Senator James Wright, of the 48th Senate District (comprising of Jefferson, Oswego, and parts of St. Lawrence Counties) officially stepped down as state Senator to take a consulting-lobbying job downstate.  This means that this seat is currently vacant, and Governor Spitzer is expected to call a special election.

Running for the vacant seat is Assemblyman Will Barclay (R-Fulton)of the 124th Assembly District (Oswego and Onondaga counties), and Assemblyman Darrel Aubertine (D-Pierrepont Manor) of the 118th "River" District (parts of Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties).  Governor Spitzer has not announced a date for the special election yet, but both candidates expect to spend several hundred thousand dollars campaigning, and it promises to be one of the most expensive campaigns in North Country history.  U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has backed Aubertine in this election, saying that his ability to work with both Republicans and Democrats in Albany is a huge asset. This is a huge election, as the Republicans currently only hold a 2-seat majority in the state Senate, and Gov. Spitzer and Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno are fighting for control of the Senate.

Darrel Aubertine, a sixth-generation farmer from Cape Vincent, has done many good things for the people of the 118th District.  Assemblyman Aubertine has secured millions of dollars for schools in the 118th District during his first term alone.  He also helped to secure $400,000 for the North Country Children's Clinic.  He has served on many Senate committees, including the Committees of Agriculture, Economic Development, Job Creation, Energy, and Higher Education.  Aubertine plans to improve access to family healthcare, make smart investments in education, among others.  His track record in the Assembly has helped to prove his effectiveness and willingness.

While no word on when this special election will occur, I encourage all people in the 48th Senate District to vote in the special election, and be sure to keep the issues on hand when making your decision.  I believe Assemblyman Aubertine will represent this District well, and I would like all of the Democrats in the 48th District to support Darrel Aubertine in this race.  Together, we can put the Senate in Democratic hands, and this election will provide one major step in this quest.
