Mayor Valerie Keehn's re-election campaign scored a major victory last Friday, as the New York State Supreme Court stuck down objections by Gordon Boyd's campaign, now enabling Keehn to compete in the upcoming Independence Party primary as a Write-In Candidate.
The Independence line is a well sought out line in the Spa City, as its 788 voters account for almost 5% of the total electorate, and can certainly help to determine close elections, especially now with the number of enrolled Democrats and Republicans inching closer and closer to parity in recent years. (For instance, last November, County Treasurer Sam Pitchervalle (R) narrowly carried Saratoga Springs, all while receiving less votes on the Republican line than his opponent Preston Jenkins received on the Democratic line; the Independence Party line made up the entire difference towards Pitchervalle's victory here in the city.) The Independence Party chair in Saratoga County is Lee Kolesnikoff, a former registered Democrat, who continues to maintain close ties to establishment Democrats in Albany, now working part time as an office manager for Assemblyman Robert Reilly (D - Colonie). During the 2005 election cycle, the Saratoga Independence Party endorsed the full Democratic slate in the Spa City with the exception of the Mayor's spot, which ultimately went to Republican Mike Lenz, who lost that November to Keehn. It's difficult to say why Boyd received the Independence endorsement this cycle, but most likely there's still some hard feelings after Lenz's defeat two years ago.
