Unfortunately, the Saratoga County Water Project passed on Tuesday with the overwhelming support of 19 of the 23 supervisors on the Republican-dominated county legislature. Two Republicans, Al Janik (R ? Greenfield), as well as Phil Barrett (R ? Clifton Park), and two Democrats, Cheryl Keyrouze (D ? Saratoga Springs), and (D ? Saratoga Springs) defected from the majority. Regardless of party affiliation, I am glad that the four defecting supervisors had the courage to back away from this scheme just designed to line the pockets of area developers. (And believe me, this is about the first time I've agreed with Barrett on ANYTHING)

Besides this, it also looks like the Board of Supervisors is about ready to blow much of the county surplus too...
But the plan, which involves a $4.8 million loan from the county, will not be without its critics, including at least one on the board. Supervisor Cheryl Keyrouze, D-Saratoga Springs, said she believes the public should have more time to review the proposal before a vote is taken.

Tuesday's scheduled vote also comes as a second contender has emerged to supply water to the Advanced Micro Devices plant. Veolia Water North America, a company that draws water from an aquifer in Schenectady, is slated to make a presentation to the supervisors at 1:30 p.m. today -- just 2 hours before the board is expected to move forward with the county plan.

Keyrouze said Monday she will try to table the vote.

"Anyone with a business degree and a working knowledge of government would realize this is not a good plan," Keyrouze said.

It isn't fair, Keyrouze said, to use $4.8 million from the county surplus when many Saratoga towns won't benefit from a pipeline running through the east side of the county.

(It all goes back to Howard Dean's old saying, "you can't trust Republicans with your money")

You just wait and see - Corinth, Greenfield, and Moreau will soon become the next Clifton Parks, Halfmoons, and Maltas. It won?t be long before the rest of Saratoga County looses its rural, bucolic feel, and just becomes another big suburban sprawl indistinguishable from the homogenized, Velveeta-style housing landscapes found in Long Island, Maryland, and New Jersey...
