It appears that Alexander "Sandy" Treadwell, the former state GOP chair, is very serious about challenging Kirsten Gillibrand in 2008, accoring to a story from today's Adirondack Daily Enterprise.
LAKE PLACID ? For now, he says, he?s just thinking about it. Alexander F. ?Sandy? Treadwell, a leading state Republican, longtime supporter of and aide to former Gov. George Pataki and now chairman of the newly formed Lake Placid Regional Winter Sports Committee, confirmed Wednesday that he?s considering a run for Congress in 2008. His opponent, should he choose to run, would be Kirsten Gillibrand, D-Hudson, who will mark her 40th day in the House of Representatives on Friday. She defeated incumbent Republican John Sweeney in the November election. Treadwell?s consideration was first reported Tuesday by Roll Call, a Washington newspaper that focuses on Capitol Hill politics. The Lake George Mirror also reported that Treadwell was thinking of running in this week?s issue. ?I?m very interested in possibly doing it,? Treadwell, a part-time resident of Lake Placid, said Wednesday. ?A lot of people have talked to me about it, and I?ve talked to a lot of people.? Still, he said, despite a number of encouraging conversations with prominent North Country Republicans, he?s not in the race yet. ?I?m not at the decision point,? Treadwell said, ?but I am interested.? Treadwell served as Pataki?s secretary of state in the 1990s before becoming chairman of the state Republican Committee in the early part of this decade. He?s currently a member of the party?s national committee and is considered, like Pataki, to be a moderate. He also maintains a home in Essex. Essex County Republican Committee Chairman Ron Jackson, supervisor of the town of Essex, said that if Treadwell decides to run for Congress, he?ll support him. ?A lot of people have asked him (to run), including me, and I would certainly applaud it,? Jackson said. ?He is experienced, highly intelligent and well thought of throughout the state and the nation.?While Mr. Treadwell is independently weathly and will certainly wage a serious campaign (if he choses to run), he can't hide the reality that he has been closely affiliated with the Bush Administration, which is bound to be an albatross for him next year. According to whitehouseforsale.org, Treadwell was one of the largest donors to George W. Bush's 2005 inauguration ceremony. Wikipedia also states that Mr. Treadwell was the "host state chairman of the Republican National Convention that nominated President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney for reelection."
