I know that New York doesn't have a U.S. Senate race in 2008.  But 33 other states do.  And anyone following the news over the last year-and-a-half has read about Senate Republicans filibustering anything and everything that moves, breaking the record for filibusters in a two-year Congressional session in less than one year!

In our upstate progressive spirit to turn the state senate blue this downstate story should be welcome news! From Newsday Spin-cycle, news that NY State Democratic leaders and Brookhaven Town Supervisor Brian Foley are considering entering the race against 82 year old backbencher Cesar Trunzo.  Also some troublesome news on Dave Mejias candidacy against Kemp Hannon.

Local and State Party leaders have been troubled by a third Jimmy Dahroug run for this seat.  State WFP leaders seem to want a more viable choice and would Brian Foley ever be that!

The partisan war for control of the state Senate is prompting maneuvers on several battlefields. Here is the latest news from two of them.

Sandy Treadwell: Not One of Us...

In keeping with Republican faux populism a la George W. Bush "the rancher," in recent campaign advertisements GE trust fund multi-millionaire Alexander "Sandy" Treadwell is now attempting to portray himself as "the farmer."

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZKyxsvOs1s4&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZKyxsvOs1s4&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

Additionally, Sandy appears to be quite far out of touch when it comes to the Iraq War and security issues. Listen to comments he made during a 2004 interview at the Republican National Convention.

Sounds like nothing more than your classic GOP party hack...

St. Lawrence County: Gus Burns for County Sheriff

If you're far up in the Northern tundra, check out the YouTube advertisements for Gus Burns, who is running to be the first Democratic County Sheriff in St. Lawrence County in more than 200 years! (Sorry the ads couldn't be posted to this page, as embedding has been disabled)

Overall, Gus has a real good shot of cruising to victory tomorrow...John Kerry carried St. Lawrence County by a healthy 12 point margin in the 2004 presidential election, the County Legislature went from being 6-3 Republican to 6-3 Democratic last year, and the number of enrolled Democrats has almost pulled even with the number of Republicans in the county for the first time since the Civil War era.
